Koki Sabatés Places Second at 2022 MODL Trial Academy; Joe Swift Serves as Faculty Member


Baker Sterchi attorney Kelly “Koki” Sabatés earned a second place finish at the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers (MODL) 2022 “John L. Oliver, Jr.” Trial Academy held at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law.

Students of MODL’s “John L. Oliver, Jr.” Trial Academy perform as defense lawyers in a mock civil trial in a learning-by-doing environment. Led by a veteran faculty of 17 defense lawyers, including Baker Sterchi Member Joseph Swift, 34 students out of law school for eight years or less, participated in the program. Sabatés received high marks from the faculty for her performance in the program, earning a second-place finish overall.

Sabatés is an associate in the firm’s St. Louis office, whose practice is focused on medical malpractice and personal injury defense. A member of the Cuban American Bar Association, she received her Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri-Columbia and is admitted to practice in Missouri.

Swift is a Member in the firm’s St. Louis office. With more than 30 years of experience as a successful trial lawyer, he has scored numerous favorable jury verdicts throughout this career. With a practice focused on representing transportation carriers, he serves as co-chair of Baker Sterchi’s Trucking Practice Group.

MODL was established to help defense attorneys provide the highest quality representation for clients throughout the state. Since its inception in 1984, the organization has supported the state’s defense lawyers with continuing legal education programs, amicus curiae briefs and a wide variety of information assistance programs.
